Breaking Barriers is a 2 year rapid-rehousing pilot program that provides short-term rental subsidies, employment services, and case management to adult felony probationers in L.A. The program is targeted toward probationers who, with appropriate supports, can become stably employed and eventually fully responsible for their own rent in a market rate apartment.
'Breaking Barriers: In Sports, In Life' is a baseball-themed character education program developed by Major League Baseball and Scholastic Inc. Using America's sport, baseball, as the metaphor for life, the curriculum is based on the values demonstrated by barrier breaker Jackie Robinson: citizenship, commitment, courage, determination, excellence, integrity, justice, persistence and teamwork.Students from grades 4 through 9, are asked to write about barriers or obstacles they have faced or are still facing in their lives, and how they used the values exemplified by Jackie Robinson to deal with those obstacles. Sharon Robinson, Consultant, Community Affairs and Educational Programming for Major League Baseball, and daughter of Jackie Robinson, developed and consults on the program. Since 1997, Breaking Barriers has reached more than 37 million youth and 5 million educators in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. The Jackie Robinson Foundation is a public, not-for-profit national organization founded by Rachel Robinson in 1973 as a vehicle to perpetuate the memory of Jackie Robinson. Breaking Barriers teaches students the characteristics and values that Jackie Robinson exhibited in his life. The nationwide program instructs 4th – 8th grade students on how to use these nine values to face and overcome the barriers in their lives.At the heart of the program is the Breaking Barriers Essay Contest.
This contest gives students the opportunity to share stories about barriers they have faced in their lives. Essay winners could win.
